The thing i dont understand is how the heck they got the threaded plates that the hinges bolt to inside the body.
If you have a duck dog well then you can t beat the barn doors.
Aim sure on the old suburbans to 83 models the body s are totally different at the bottom section.

I dont like the barn doors and i decide to do the rear tailgate conversion.
This is a crappy picture but where the lights go is where the plastic piece of the bumper meets the doors.
Only drawback is the liftgate i just hated it on my blazer and sure not going to like it on burban.
Where as the barn doors are a solid door with no roll at the bottom.
I bought a suburban where the swap was already done due the floor being rotted out.
I have the barn doors on my 00 yukon if your looking to customize the tails its hardewr to find ones made for the barn doors.
Ive wanted to do the same thing but i would have to cut the plastic out of the bumper to make it look right.
Im not gonna use the rear wiper so i deleted it.

But yeah as was said you just need the doors hinges threaded plates for the bolts to.
Our new denali has the power liftgate and we feel is the only way to go but only because it is effortless and i don t miss seeing the posts in the rear view mirror.
I ve personally never have seen a 2003 or newer tahoe suburban or yukon without a liftgate.
I love barn doors.
I guess the lab s input swayed me to go to the barn doors.
I went to the junk yard and i got a rear tailgate and a the glass from a 97 suburban i took everything but the lower tailgate brackets since they are welded on.
Especially when you can put a step in the trailer hitch for them to get in and out.
But i use mine a lot.
To my understanding it was 2002.
It s has to do in the floor if you have barn doors the locking sockets are made in the floor so the body over there is designed for it if you have a tail gate the floor have a totally other setting.
More work then i wanted to deal with.
