I know that when you delete a file, it only erases the directions to the file. I also know that a deleted file can eventually be overwritten. But is there anyway (as is, a process or some free software) than you can go in and actually manually write over these files? I have file recovery software, so I can see that the files are still there. Any suggestions would be great! Like I said, I understand that these files will eventually be written over, but is there a way to speed up this process? (without having to pay for a computer shop to do it)
does anybody know of any freeware or shareware programs that are similar to Norton, only without the cost?

June 5th, 2010 by | 1 Comment | Filed in harddrive recoveryMy Western Digital external started to not be reconized on my computers and I want to try to see if there are any free programs or software to help this out. I prefer not to send it into data recovery companies yet because I heard that it is expensive, but I have about 150 GB of data I need. Very important documents for my graphic arts projects. Thanks.

June 4th, 2010 by | 2 Comments | Filed in harddrive recoveryWhat do you guys think could cause this and what can I try to fix it? I’m helping out a friend and right now his harddrive (when put into my pc cause his nolonger works) comes up with the safe mode or normal windows options in DOS. Anything I choose causes the computer to reboot. He wants me to save the files on the harddrive so anybody know any good freeware harddrive recovery programs or something?
I took out my harddrive and am just using his as primary. i’ll try doing slave if it can.
How do you completely clear a computer harddrive to sell it to a complete stranger?
June 3rd, 2010 by | 6 Comments | Filed in harddrive recoveryI want to sell a desktop computer on ebay or craigslist, but obviously i dont want any of my info to be on there. can i just use the recovery CD and make the computer like it was when i bought it? or will there still be personal info hidden away on it.? It is a Dell, by the way.
So with this software (like DBAN), would i do this first, then format the drive, then recovery CD ? is that right?
